This volume comprises the papers presented at the 6th Meeting of the ICAZ Bird Working Group, held in August 2008 in Groningen, the Netherlands. The subjects of the contributions range from New Zealand, South America and the Near East to Europe and vary in time from the Pleistocene up to the late 19th century. Themes discussed are the palaeozoogeography of birds, the role of birds in subsistence, ritual and symbolism, bird hunting techniques and histological studies of bird bones. The geographical, temporal and thematic variation underlines the importance of ornito-archaeozoology for all aspects of archaeology.

Reviews
"All in all, the book is well-printed and well-illustrated including some very beautiful color paintings and photographs. The collected papers are very diverse. Ranging from articles pursuing one isolated research question like the one by Prummel & Drenth trying to identify the bird bone which made imprints on two Tureen-amphorae to large comparative synthetic studies including multiple sites of the e.g., subsistence strategies of northern and southern hemisphere maritime hunter-gatherers by Lefèvre. The book certainly contributes with new insight into a broad specter of avian archaeozoological research fields and merits to be widely distributed to all that take an interest in birds and past human societies and how they interrelated."
